WHAT CAN WE DO TO CONSERVE WATER USAGE?

There are a few countries in the world where fresh water flows freely and in abundance. Rainfall is plentiful in Malaysia, and therefore it becomes easy to take fresh water for granted. The truth is that Malaysia is on the verge of a major water crisis and effort is required from all its citizens to help improve the situation.

The following are a list of things we can all do to conserve water usage:

1. Turn the tap off while brushing your teeth.
2. Use a basin of water for shaving
3. Take quick showers rather than baths
4. Make sure all leaks are fixed
5. Install low and dual flush cisterns
6. Install low flow shower heads and faucet aerators (which disperses water, making it more efficient)
7. Use grey water (water used for washing) to water plants
8. Water plants in the morning and evenings. Watering during midday heightens evaporation and leaves less for the plants
9. Wash dishes with a tub of water instead of running the tap

On top of conserving water, it is important to ensure that we prevent our drinking water from being polluted. These are steps we can take to guard against water pollution.
# Do not throw in the trash, pour down the drain or dump on the ground paint, antifreeze, motor oil, and other household hazardous wastes, because they can migrate to your water source.
# Plant native plants instead of traditional lawn grass to avoid the use of herbicies, pesticides and fertilizers.
